DO YOUR OWN PATENT SEARCH VIDEO
STEP 1: Go to www.google.com/patents
Just type in terms or any sort of words to best describe your invention. Take your time and be as thorough as you can be. Also, type in some of the key features which may distinguish your invention over the others.
Step 3 (If necessary): Go to USPTO website: http://patft.uspto.gov
Type in your terms as you did with Google/Patents. Set the Years to (1790-Present) Start with the Title. Then use abstract. Proceed to the claims. Use this process for BOTH issued patents as well as the published patent applications.HIT "GRID-VIEW"
You may also want to hit the "Images" tab so you can see the drawings. You might want to try to screen-shot the drawings and print them out.ALSO PERFORM A BASIC GOOGLE PRIOR ART SEARCH
Products which are not patented or filed can still be a problem for getting your application approved.-

Step 2: Download any available pdf's off Google Patents, if available.
Hopefully, the pdf will be available for quick download. If not, then you will have to go to the USPTO website. These pdf's can be very useful because they have everything you will need including the drawings. This is not available off the USPTO website which is not as user-friendly.
